Is Penhaligon going to return in the new one? I really hope she does. She's my favorite character and I'm a fan of Geraldine Somerville. She's a great actress and is very pretty.

With Beck and Billburough dead, Jane is one of the last of the originals. I think a show with her and Fitz at the center would be a great one. Pehaps with Jane as a new DCI who must relunctantly be the one to hire Fitz...a turnabout from the days when she had to plead with Billborough to take Fitz on.

PS I got the first season on DVD and I have been watching them in anticiapation of the new program. I have most of the others on VHS that I taped off the TV..the DVDs are nice to have as a set

I think it's very important that they try to get the remaining characters back if possible - simply because those characters made the show as much as Fitz. And as much as I would love a new series like what has been hinted at by ITV, I think I would really have a problem with it if it was Fitz and a whole bunch of new characters in new surroundings. I really don't like the idea of that at all! I know given the time gap between the final series and now, it may have to happen - and I'm sure whatever crime stories were written (particulary if they were done by McGovern) it would always be worth watching,...but, I do think if that happened I would personally have trouble with it

Isn't that part of the reason why White Ghost was so bad - having so few of the original cast members (as well as a poor storyline)? I can't imagine they'd bother risking that again...

I still haven't been able to watch White Ghost because she's not in it. I watch my DVD's until the end of True Romance and then stop it when it's time for White Ghost. ;D

hello well the new one off special of cracker to be shown in early 2006 i would believe because its in post production now there is certainty that geraldine somerville is playing a new role because she was promoted thats why she didnt appear in white ghost which to my recall isnt the best episode but not bad either its robbie coltrane and thats ok with me well as i was saying she was promoted yes to either D.I or D.C.I but i can sense ricky tomlinson may return as dci wise i can sense judith, mark, katy, penhaligan fitzs brother played by clive russel currently the guy who plays gayles fling in coronation street he will be back oh and yes the waking the dead star on bbc the black guy he will be in it too as for new actors i would say yes a new villian, rapist, muderer is for certain if the storyline takes the same approach as in previous crackers the same actors which made it so great are there and it has a good plot yes it will be a hit when it comes to the screens in 2006

I think she WILL be in there, if they have to with Flash-backs.. but whe will be in it. The cracker-episodes weren't possible to continue after 3 seasons due to all the killing / deaths with the main characters.
After Giggs, Billborough, Beck (that's your police-team) you would get Panhandle... After Mark (True Romance) you would get to Judith (happened allready in Men should Weep.. the role of Katie is not enough to support an episode in it) and after that Fitz would be the one (like Tina tried in To say I love you)...
They were simply running out of characters to keep the story engripping (or.. like McGovern says: Big Issues... allthough he tends to kill few of his main characters in the serie 'The Lakes' too, and leaves the remnants to others to write up).
So to really get a real story.. and that was the premiss both McGovern and Coltrane would jump on the wagon. You have to have a good story (and that is trusted with McGovern) and a gripping script (and Coltrane does have the luxury to say 'no' to a bad script).
I dare to make a totalbet.com betting to state Panhandle will be in it, and win on a canter, reminds me to LIVE ;D

Worst case scenario:
McGovern wrote her in the script, and she's tossed out. Guest P knows because he's director or someone with a direct line to the one off.
Realistic worse case:
Worldwide we Fitz-fans are (on this site and other plaxes) about a few hundred, max. Down in the Netherlands I've counted 3, including myself. Do new viewers (it's all about airing time and commercials) give a thing about a tv-romance so much years ago... they want to be caught up in an engrossing story. Would a tv-station dare to air an uncut version of, say 1900 / Novecento (the whole 6 hours)?
Realistic case:
Panhandle will be named, but won't be in sight. Fitz is really old now, not capable of flirting like he did on 45. If she is on screen, no flirting will be there.
Unrealistic scenario: P is a troll, or P stands for Panhandle and is Geraldine herself - just being cut out the editing, but not allowed to talk about it ;-)
I'm curious if Barbara Flynn, Tess Thomson and all will be the same actors. I'm allready nervous on this one-off...

Nice link,
Oh well, they didn't write she would not be in it, didn't they?
I'm happy as long as Judith, Mark & Katie are there... After White Ghost, the first premisse was that Jimmy McGovern had to write the script, he did.
Then we asked to have may of the ol' characters back, they are in family. Can you expect coppers to stay at the same nick for 10+ years?
I can think of one, but he jumped of a building...

As well as the new IMDB page not listing her, I've had confirmation now that she's not in it. She was meant to be, so I have no idea what's happened It's just really disappointing. Whilst I really can't wait for the new episode and the return of Fitz to our screens again after all these years, it just won't feel quite the same without Penhaligon being in it. She's clearly destined never to be in any of the special one-off episodes!!

Not sure how I should read this... She's not in the one-off, sad... but fair enough. Actors probably have less emotional ties with series / movies than we have, and sometimes they have to choose for their living. I can imagine Robbie isn't tied to this one-off for his income, others probably should choose between a stage and this thing, and have to feed kids, pay taxes, etc. etc. I;m curious what sources confirmed this sad news, apart the IMDB, Sarah Your last line is intriguing: any of the special one-off... are there more to come? And is Judith in these? I fear if there are too many, we have to stick with the original 9 ones. The Shakespearian drama in these made it clear the story had to end: after all the killing of the police-officers (Giggs, Billborough, Beck), the almost-rape of Judith, the kidnapping of Mark... last episode that could believable be written was Fitz getting hostaged and talked and farted his way out of it. IMHO it was the end of the series was not only the fact that mr. mcgovern ran out of issues... they ran out of characters...
