Sarah, can't thank you enough for putting the site together. It was a great companion while I watched the whole DVD box set recently. Can you or anyone tell me what is the significance of people toasting 'Scunthorpe' throughout the series, I mean Fitz even did it in Hong Kong!! Was I making a cuppa rosy lee when it was explained? Great news on this years comeback too, although I worry whether it will have the same effect after so long, and of course the addition of recent, similar dramas like 'Wire In The Blood'.

Hi Ian - thank you for your kind comments about the site, and for posting Erm, yeah...the "Scunthorpe" toast - it does come up a lot, and I'm afraid I don't know the full reasoning behind it. It all stemmed from 'To Be A Somebody' when Fitz and Judith were having a conversation and Fitz first said about it, and then it kept coming up! So I'm sorry I can't help you - I don't know the full significance of it I might be able to find out though.... Re the new episode, I hope to get some definite news about it very, very soon so we will hopefully know a bit more about it before too long. With McGovern writing it then I certainly think it will be as effective as anything else that he did from the series, and it will be SO good to see Fitz again after all these years. I don't worry about other shows like 'Wire In The Blood' too much - I know it's all "psychology" based in that too (but I confess I've never really watched that much of it), but for me Cracker still stands so high above most other crime dramas like that, simply because McGovern's stories always had a point to make as well as being riveting drama. But I guess we'll see in time if it goes ahead!

Thanks for coming back Sarah and if you could find out, it really would be most appreciated. It's funny isn't it? Once you've got a question logged in your brain - it really does need answering. Well it is for me. Oh I agree Cracker has been the definitive TV drama, and the others a mere shadow, but at least they kept me intrigued until J. McGovern found a topic worth writing, for Fitz to unravel. Just out of interest what did you think about 'White Ghost'? Personally, very disappointed

No trouble Ian, leave the Scunthorpe thing with me and i'll see if I can find out. White Ghost....honestly? I didn't like it all. No disrespect to Paul Abbott, he's a great writer, but it just didn't work for me at all. I hated that Fitz was so far away from Manchester, that there was no family or Panhandle, I didn't think much of the crime story and I didn't like any of the police officers bought into it (except Wise, of course). I'm presuming those were similar reasons as to why you were disappointed in it? It was massive letdown, and as a Cracker story I can honestly say it's the only one I never watch repeatedly. I love all the others immensely obviously

I'd never seen White Ghost until last week, and wish I never had. It just didn't work for me. Seemed like an excuse for the crew to go abroad for a jolly. Out of interest Sarah, are you a web designer by trade? After all this site is as professional as any other.
cheers, Ian

LOL...no I wish I was though! Probably earn me more money than I do where I currently work! No, I really just taught myself using Front Page. I keep finding new stuff all the time, so work out ways to improve things but I know there is so much more I can do with it that I haven't even tried yet (but to be honest I'm still not very good with HTML!). Thanks for your kind comments though about the site - much appreciated, it really is

I've never used Front Page, but it's obviously good. I've a little experience with Dreamweaver, and manipulating images with Photoshop, but only from a hobby perspective. I notice you've had a few 'hits' from the U.S. I saw the pilot of their series, but it didn't work for me. I guess they must have seen the original Cracker by now on cable - they like / prefer?
cheers - Ian

I found this at another URL: www.palimpsest.org.uk/forum/archive/index.php/t-2435.html"My personal favourite was when Fitz explained that even Scunthorpe could be the answer to a question i.e. name a town that is worse than Grimsby. I was living in Scunthorpe and working in Grimsby at the time which might explain why I was particularly tickled by it. I liked the fact that 'Scunthorpe!' then became Fitz's equivalent of 'bottoms up' or whatever when he was drinking."

Fitz said, the first time they brought it up, "Scunthorpe is not the answer." So I always took it that every time they drank to Scunthorpe, they were really drinking to the fact that life has no real answers. Which is a very "Cracker" philosophy, I think.

That Scunthorpe/Grimsby scene is surely relevant. Still, the simpler explanation seems to me to be that, while other Englishmen drink to the more popular and famous football clubs, such as Manchester United, contrarian Fitz insists on toasting the (at the time) third division Scunthorpe United club.

Hi
This is confusing:
I think it first comes up in conversation between Fitz and Judith: Judith "Scunthorpe is not the answer". Fitz "What is the town due west of Grimsby? Answer Scunthorpe!"
but how it migrates to police consience is unclear. It has become a salute/cheers/toast!

the main reason Jimmy McGovern mentions Scunthorpe in his scripts is that he lived in Scunthorpe for a couple of years, and has fond memories of the town.
