Not sure how aware people are of this info, but was just looking at the Cracker page on IMDB.com and there are a couple of little bits of info I find interesting.
Firstly, one of the credits relates to someone playing a "Wallet thief". As the character has no name other than that it is obviously a VERY small part. So... I think this will be the device to get Fitz into the police station, thus enabling him to meet the new boss and the rest of the detective team. Having Fitz just walk in off the street, as he did in Mad Woman In The Attic would possibly be a bit less likely this time, as it's supposed to be a flying visit. So I think he will get his wallet lifted, the guy will be caught by cops (possibly at the airport) and Fitz will have to go and make a statement. There he will see the new police building and meet some of the new guys working there.
Second piece of info I find interesting is that one of the new cops is called DS Saleh ( Nisha K. Nayar), now call me Mr Generalization, but I am assuming she will be Muslim. Jimmy McGovern often has police characters in the episodes who are in some way emotionally effected by the case (from a much greater level than simply a career perspective) - remember the black police officer in Men Should Weep, and the close ups of him when Floyd was talking about white men being afraid of black men? Or Panhandle herself being a victim of rape at that point?
Well due to this character being here (and I may be going completely off the deep end here), I think this is the upshot of what will happen...
The ex-soldier will be in a working men's club late one night, drinking heavily to drown his traumatic images. The American comedian will be on stage and will be talking about 9/11, making light of it. He will then relate it to the IRA, and make light of that as well. HE'S AS GOOD AS DEAD! The soldier flips, confronts the guy in an alley outside the club, or in his dressing room, and delivers one of those great McGovern speeches (as Albie did to the shopkeeper in To Be A Somebody), flips, and kills him.
He will then start killing Muslims, taking out the frustrations he felt towards the IRA on this new "enemy" (enemy in his mind). Whether he will kill individual Muslims or actually blow up something like a mosque remains to be seen... Since he is an ex-soldier who would have knowledge of explosives, and since this Cracker is a "special", with a greater amount of money behind the budget, I suspect it will be the latter of these two.
This will cause a lot of tension between the Muslim police officer and her colleagues.
That's all I have so far. What do people think? Does that sound plausible? Completely unrealistic? Am I Stating the obvious?
It looks good in my head so I hope it is kind of like that. The whole Muslim/white thing is a VERY sensitive subject in this country right now, and McGovern likes to approach those subjects like a bull at a flag, so I think this may be the case.
