Panhandle or it aint worth watching. Becks brother could be a starting point but whatever happens it has got to be a story that is independant of the Fitz family and Robbie has to fail to solve the crime. This is one of the best things about UK TV that you cannot gaurantee the goodies do get the badies. Hope the forum goes well, Iain homepages.paradise.net.nz/bibble ;D

Panhandle or it aint worth watching. I couldn't agree more. It's going to be so disappointing if she's not in the special, she was sorely missed in "White Ghost". Thing is, with it being a 2 hour special, i'm not sure what to expect really. It could be just a crime story, with little focus on Fitz's personal life because of the time element. I really hope not though. And I really like to think that he will still be working at the same place. Thanks for posting btw, Iain and for the good luck re the forum!

Hi Esa! Welcome to the board! Yes, Jimmy McGovern has said it would be different. I wonder in what way? I maybe thought it would have something to do with the crime story, but it's hard to tell at this stage. I e-mailed ITV, who will be making the new special, last week asking if there was a bit more information available regarding filming and the cast. Heard nothing back yet, and I may not do so - fingers crossed though. But I thought maybe anything they could tell me might give us a bit more idea as to what to expect. It would be nice to know a little bit more I must admit!

From what little info I have I think it's going to be a 2 hour special, which I imagine when it gets screened here in the UK will be shown in one go (or maybe over two nights as 2 x 1 hour episodes).

Jimmy McGovern stopped writing "Cracker" because, apparently, he'd run out of major issues to deal with. The main one he missed out, as far as I can see, is paedophilia, although he does touch lightly on that in "Men Should Weep". Personally I reckon McGovern is the only person who could tackle such a topic maturely and sensitively. But then, I've also heard that he is planning on doing something "post-September 11th", which I presume covers everything from our current fear of terrorist attacks to racism against Muslims. Whichever "major issue" he decides to write about, I just hope McGovern writes something that has the impact of, say, "To Be a Somebody". Something around 15 million viewers watched that episode - and consequently those 15 million viewers were presented with a hard-hitting, brutal yet honest representation of life in working class Britain post-Hillsborough. I know it's optimistic to hope that the same number of viewers will return to watch the new episode - less and less people are watching television nowadays, after all - but still, part of the reason "Cracker" is being brought back is because of the massive ratings coup achieved by the return of "Prime Suspect". My biggest hope for this new episode is that Jimmy McGovern produces something just as hard-hitting, just as thought-provoking and just as watchable as "To Be a Somebody". It's asking a lot, I know, for a two hour long show. But I know Jimmy McGovern has the ability. And yes, it would be nice for Penhaligon to come back too.

I recently bought the complete set of Cracker & love them all except the last episode "White Ghost" which was very disappointing. Now I see that there is going to be a 2005 special it is such a relief as there were so many unanswered questions left hanging in the air. I am in agreement with most, Penhaligon has to be in it. Her presence brings out the softer, vulnerable side of Fitz we don't often see. Sorry to say I never did like Judith even though I know she had a lot to put up with living with Fitz. She is manipulative, & the writers should just marry her off to Fitz's brother. Is there a date when the special will be aired? I live in California so I am sure it won't be shown here until later. As Penhaligon is now a D.I. she could decide to seek Fitz out to help her solve an extremely difficult case. Working together again after all these years would give them the opportunity to resolve their differences & take a look at where they both are in their lives right now. I hope we don't have to wait too long, but it will have been worth the wait.

Since I live in America, they had better air this on BBC America or put it out on a Region 0 DVD. I will so upset if I never see this.

Just want to say thank you for the webmaster of this site. For someone who is also a fan of Cracker and yet living in Hong Kong, your site provided the most needed info I want. Thanks. I have just got the box set (yes it is bloody expensive) and slowly enjoying the thrill again. And hearing that it is coming back in 2005 is just too good to be true. Unfortunately, I perhaps have to wait a bit longer before I can see the series in Hong Kong.

No trouble Wai Chi Glad you liked the site. Yeah, the box set is expensive - although it has dropped a bit in price over the last year - but well worth getting! I do hope people outside of the UK don't have to wait too long for the new episode.

Wouldn't it be great to organize a sort of *preview* party in the UK to watch the show before it airs on TV ;D
I think it would and -
